In April 1984,with the approval of the Ministry of Textile Industry,Northwest Textile Institute opened a major in fashion design. In the same year, the Department of Clothing was established, the predecessor of the School of Fashion and Art Design of Xi'an Engineering University.In 1987, apparel design and engineering created the first master's degree authorization point in apparel specialty in China.

After more than 30 years of unremitting development, the School of Apparel and Art Design has 10 undergraduate majors, 16 professional orientations, 1 first-level discipline (design), and 10 disciplines.In 2000,the Master of Design Art was successfully established.In 1998, the college was awarded as one of the top ten colleges by China Fashion Design Association.Apparel design and engineering was rated as national-level specialty,national-level excellent engineer program professional construction point, national-level professional comprehensive reform pilot, provincial-level clothing talent training model innovation experimental zone, Shaanxi famous brand professional, Shaanxi provincial specialty, andprovincial key discipline.The art design profession was rated as national-level specialty,famous brand in Shaanxi Province, special specialty in Shaanxi Province, provincial-level “professional comprehensive reform demonstration zone” and model teaching unit.In 2017, three undergraduate majors in apparel design and engineering, clothing and apparel design and performance were selected as “first-class professional” construction projects in Shaanxi province.

The college has 206 faculty members. There are 167 teachers, 19 administrative staff, 19 experimental personnel,1 scientific researcher; 17 professors, 42 associate professors, 83 lecturers, 18 doctors, 14 doctors, and more than 30 teachers with overseas study experience.There are 4531 undergraduates and 475 postgraduates.In the past five years,the teachers of the college have made rich scientific research achievements. At present,the college has undertaken more than 600 research projects in various vertical and horizontal fields, including national and provincial projects.It has won1 Natural Science Fund project, 2 NationalS ocialScience Fund projects and 3 National Art Fund projects.More than 1100 academic papers have been published in public academic journals at home and abroad,including more than 80 papers in EI and SCI. The teacher has written more than 80 monographs and textbooks, including 23 textbooks of national ministries and commissions, and has obtained more than 1,000 scientific research results.
